This paper examines the North Korean refugee narratives in American literature in Helie Lee’s memoir In the Absence of Sun and Krys Lee’s novel How I Became a North Korean. The narratives show how the North Korean refugees become religious beings as they encounter the message of Christian salvation during their perilous journeys. Helie Lee’s story maintains a Christian optimism, entrusting human destiny to God. On the other hand, in Krys Lee’s novel, the church is portrayed as evil, obstructing the will to survival and freedom. The two stories, in different ways, relay the harrowing experiences of North Korean refugees and their encounters with Christianity. In this paper, I trace how the two Korean writers reinterpret Christianity through the themes of ‘faith’ and ‘salvation’ as represented in their works.

본 연구는 한국계 미국작가 이혜리와 크리스 리의 작품을 통하여 두 작가의 탈북서사가 재현하는 기독교의 모습을 탐구한다. 두 작품은 특히 미국문학의 영역에서 탈북을 소재로 삼았다는 점과 탈북서사와 기독교와의 만남을 예시한다는 점에서 주목할만하다. 작가는 환란으로 점철된 탈출의 여정에서 탈북자들이 기독교적 구원의 메시지를 접하면서 종교적 주체로 전환하는 모습을 탐구한다. 기독교는 사마리아인의 옷을 입고 절대적 환대와 구원을 설파하지만, 때로는 탈북자들의 삶에 고통과 고난을 가중하는 거대악으로 묘사되기도 한다. 이혜리의 탈북서사는 위험천만의 순간에도 신의 섭리에 의존하고 인간의 안위를 신에게 위탁하는 기독교적 낙관주의를 유지한다. 반면 크리스 리의 소설에서 교회는 오히려 탈북인의 생존과 자유로 향한 의지를 위협하는 일탈의 모습으로 형상화된다. 두 작가의 문학이 다른 방식으로 기독교를 재현하는 과정을 추적하면서 궁극적으로 작품이 은유하는 ‘믿음’과 ‘구원’의 문제를 고찰한다.
