“Poetic Liberty and Liturgical Reformation: Milton’s Paraphrases of Psalms 114 and 136.”

Abstract

This essay sheds new light on John Milton’s earliest poems, namely, the paraphrases of Psalms 114 and 136, which have long been neglected by critics. These metrical psalms, paraphrased by Milton at the age of fifteen, are usually treated by scholars as nothing more than Milton’s juvenile exercises. Within the historical context of the early 1620s, however, Milton’s metrical paraphrases of Psalms 114 and 136 deserve a more nuanced reading. I argue that Milton approached the challenge of translating the psalms not simply as an exercise in translation but as an attempt to reform the vernacular metrical psalm as a means of balancing poetic liberty with the liturgical aspect of the psalm tradition.
