Hebbel’s drama Judith, which draws material from the Bible of “Judith”, deals with the issue of the Theodicy. Hebbel does not assert an unconditional goodness and belief in God. He reflects on the reality in which a Christian’s faith can be shaken and destroyed due to the cold nature of God. In the drama Judith, Daniel and Judith are God’s chosen instruments for the political salvation of the Israeli people, but they are put in a tragic situation. The responsibility lies not only with humans but also with God. God appears as an arbitrary and contradictory image. God does not take responsibility for the suffering of humans, which he used as instruments to achieve his will. As such, Hebbel’s drama Judith provides an opportunity to reflect on the Christian idea of God and salvation.

구약 성서 외경 ｢유디트｣에서 소재를 취하여 만들어진 헤벨의 드라마 󰡔유디트󰡕는 신정론의 문제를 다루고 있다. 헤벨은 신의 절대적 선함과 그에 대한 믿음을 주장하지 않는다. 오히려 신의 냉담한 특성으로 인해 기독교인의 신앙이 흔들리고 무너질 수 있는 현실을 성찰한다. 이것이 성경과의 명료한 차이점으로, 드라마에서는 신의 존재를 믿고 살아가는 사람들의 비극성이 연출된다. 다니엘과 유디트는 이스라엘 민족의 정치적 구원을 위해 선택된 신의 도구들이지만, 현실의 비난과 내적 분열을 감내해야 하는 비극적 상황에 놓인다. 그 비극성의 책임은 인간뿐만 아니라 신에게도 있다. 신은 자신의 뜻을 이루는 도구로 사용한 인간의 고통을 책임지지 않는 자의적이고 모순적인 모습으로 나타난다. 이로써 헤벨의 드라마 󰡔유디트󰡕는 기독교의 신과 구원 이념에 대한 성찰의 계기를 제공한다.
