This study originally planned to explore the overseas trends of research on ‘literature and religion’ to examine the present address of commemorating the 30th anniversary of the foundation of the Korean Society of Literature and Religion. During the progress of this study, the investigation of the overseas trends of research on ‘literature and religion’ naturally led to reflection on the significance of ‘literature and religion’ today, which is being called the ‘era of post-secularism.’ The era of post-secularism could become a momentum in which religious reasons come closer to human life and a religion can combine with literature that represents human lives. In this context, this study would investigate the overseas trends of research on literature and religion and revisit the significance of research on literature and religion today.

본 논문은 이른바 ‘융합의 시대’인 오늘날 문학과 종교의 관계성 및 ‘문학과 종교’ 연구의 의미에 대해 다시 검토해 보는 것을 목적으로 한다. ‘문학과 종교’는 서로를 ‘분야’ 혹은 ‘전공’이라는 폐쇄적 울타리에서 해방시킬 가능성을 내포하고 있다는 점에서, ‘융합의 시대’인 오늘날 ‘문학과 종교’ 연구에 대한 적극적인 재검토가 필요하다고 할 수 있다. 본 논문은 한국문학과종교학회 창립 30주년을 기념하여 ‘문학과 종교’ 연구의 현주소를 검토하기 위해, ‘문학과 종교’의 해외 연구 동향을 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 기획되었다. 본 연구를 진행하면서 ‘문학과 종교’의 해외 연구 동향에 대한 조사는 자연스럽게 ‘포스트세속주의 시대’라고 불리는 오늘날의 ‘문학과 종교’ 연구의 의미에 대한 성찰로 이어졌다. 포스트세속주의와 관련하여, 위르겐 하버마스는 근대화를 통해 종교가 사라질 것이라는 확신과 반대로 종교가 새로운 공공의 영향력을 갖고 우리의 삶과 더욱 긴밀한 관계를 맺게 되었다고 진단한다. 즉, 어떻게 보면 포스트세속주의 시대는 종교적 사유가 인간의 삶에 더 가까이 친근하게 다가오는 계기가 될 수 있으며, 종교가 인간의 삶을 재현하는 문학과 결합하기에 좋은 기회가 될 수 있다. 이러한 맥락에서, 본 논문은 ‘문학과 종교’의 해외 연구 동향을 살펴보고, 오늘날 문학과 종교 연구의 의미를 되짚어 본다.
