This essay aims to study Buber’s I And Thou and to examine James’s Daisy Miller: A Study from the theoretical viewpoint of Buber. In the book, Buber mainly argues that the way of I—Thou means a personal relationship we move into existence. I—Thou is available when the sphere of between arises. In between, Thou is encountered in its entirety, which Buber calls a kind of encounter meeting. Meanwhile, the way of I—It means an impersonal relationship we move toward the object we experience. Buber argues that when I—Thou occurs, we can be moral and our life can change. In Daisy Miller: A Study, Winterbourne feels love when he first meets Daisy. But he becomes obsessed with the question, ‘is she a flirt, or a coquette, or an innocent American girl?’ From that time on he watches Daisy as if she were a thing to be known, or put to some purpose. Throughout the novel, Winterbourne shows the way of I—It toward Daisy, which causes her life to end.

부버에 따르면 ‘나—너’ 그리고 ‘나—그것’은 사람이 세계에 대해 취하는 이 중적인 태도를 표시한다는 의미에서 근원어라고 불릴 수 있다. ‘나—그것’은 사 물의 세계다. 내가 ‘그것’이라고 말할 때 ‘나’는 타인을 대상물로 소유하고 그것 으로부터 사물성을 이끌어낸다. 이때 나는 대상물을 소유하는 주체로서 세워진 다. ‘나—너’는 관계의 세계다. ‘나―너’는 내가 타인을 대상물로 인식하지 않 으려고 노력할 때 자기중심주의가 극복될 수 있고, 자기중심주의가 극복될 때 자기중심주의 너머에 있는 사이의 영역이 모습을 드러낸다. 자아의 의도에서 도 출되지 않은 이 사이의 영역에서 나는 직접적인 상태로 너와 관계를 맺을 수 있 다. 부버는 ‘나—너’를 다른 말로 만남이라고 부른다. 􋺷데이지 밀러: 한 연구􋺸 에서 윈터본은 데이지를 ‘나—그것’으로 대한다. 윈터본은 데이지를 본 순간 그 녀의 아름다운 외모에 반해 그녀에게 사로잡힌다. 그는 데이지에게 호감을 느끼 면서도 그녀에게서 냉철한 시선을 거두지 않는다. 윈터본은 데이지를 범주화하 고 관찰하고 연구하면서 그녀를 추론과 인과율의 세계에 가둔다. 결국 윈터본은 데이지가 창녀 같은 여자라고 확신하게 되고 그의 의식에 그녀는 일정한 내용 을 지닌 사물과 같은 ‘그것’으로 저장된다. 결국 윈터본의 이런 태도는 데이지 의 죽음을 초래한다.
