The Fathers of the Western and Eastern Orthodox Churches see evil as a privation. In Dead Souls, Chichikov, Manilov, Sobakevich, Plyuskin, and Chichikov’s superiors reveal their demonic nature through the ‘lack’ of external characteristics, passion, soul, and emotions, etc. Also, almost all of the characters are burdened with lies. Lies have been understood as a devilish quality and a tool for revealing one’s demonic nature, not only in Russian Orthodox Christianity, but also in Christianity. Dead Souls depicts a world in which there is no ‘virtue’ and ‘good’. It is a world where lies and fraud are rampant. All the characters are engulfed with the fear that they might be deceived, so they lie in order not to be deceived, not to suffer harm, and furthermore, to follow their greed and desires to gain something more. The author challenges the reader to take a spiritual leap to a higher level by showing the lowest step in the Russian Orthodox stairway to spiritual perfection.

서구 기독교와 비잔틴 정교회의 교부들은 악을 ‘결여’로 본다. 􋺷죽은 혼􋺸의 치치코프, 마닐로프, 소바케비치, 플류시킨, 치치코프의 상관 등은 외적 특징, 열정, 영혼, 감정 등의 ‘결여’로 악마성을 드러낸다. 그리고 거의 모든 등장인물 들이 거짓말로부터 자유롭지 않은데, 러시아 정교뿐 아니라, 기독교에서 거짓말 은 악마의 자질로, 악마성을 드러내는 도구로 이해되어 왔다. 􋺷죽은 혼􋺸은 마땅 히 존재해야 하는 ‘덕’과 ‘선’이 부재한 세계를 거짓말과 사기행각이 만연한 세 상으로 그려낸다. 등장인물 모두 속을지 모른다는 두려움과 공포에 휩싸여 있 고, 그렇기 때문에 속지 않기 위해, 손해를 입지 않기 위해 그리고 더 나아가 자 신의 탐심과 욕망을 따라 뻔히 눈을 뜨고서도 뭔가를 더 얻어내기 위해 거짓말 을 한다. 저자는 러시아 정교에서 이야기하는 영적 완성의 계단에서 가장 아래 단계를 보여줌으로써 보다 더 높은 단계로의 영적 도약을 독자들에게 주문하고 있다.
