James Baldwin’s novel, If Beale Street Could Talk. I analyze Baldwin’s understanding of the legacy of blues in music to show African Americans’ perseverance and possibility of liberation in response to oppression and unjust treatment in the U.S. The meaning of blues in the novel expresses the lives and struggles of African Americans. Baldwin depicts a young black man, Fonny, who does not lose hope and perseveres with sensation of blues even though he is wrongly detained for rape as the result of a false accusation by a police officer. This paper discusses how Baldwin depicts those struggles and the agony of African Americans with the legacy of blues and attempts to overcome adversity.
