This study reads Lee Seung-woo’s novel “Portrait of Erizicton” as a problem of religious ‘salvation’. In this work, the problem of religious salvation exists in the process of drawing various portraits of the mythical figure Erizicton. Salvation as a practice of life is attempted through several male characters, but this ultimately results in failure and incompleteness. However, through the female character Hye-ryeong, this salvation is made possible through a new life and concrete practice. Nevertheless, the problem with femininity in the novel shows its limitations, in that the embodied women are edified, mystified, and romanticized by men. The fact that a woman, who is usually marginalized in matters of religion, becomes an active subject of religious practice and salvation is a point that shows a meaningful achievement unique to Lee Seung-woo’s novels that existing religious novels have not been able to show.

본 연구는 이승우의 장편소설 『에리직톤의 초상』을 종교적 구원의 문제로 읽어나간다. 이 작품에서 종교적 구원의 문제는 신화 속 인물인 에리직톤의 여러 가지 초상을 그리는 과정에 존재한다. 삶의 실천으로서의 구원은 여러 남성 인물들을 통해 시도되지만 이는 결국 실패와 미완으로 귀결된다. 그러나 이 구원은 여성 인물을 통해 새로운 삶과 구체적 실천으로 가능해진다. 그럼에도 소설 속 여성성의 문제는 그 한계를 보여주는데, 구현된 여성들이 남성에 의해 교화되고 신비화되고 낭만화되어있다는 점이다. 이승우는 종교와 철학, 인간 존재에 대한 심도 있는 질문으로써 자신의 독특한 문학세계를 구축해 왔다. 통상 종교의 문제에서 소외되기 쉬운 여성이 종교적 실천과 구원의 적극적 주체가 된다는 것은 기존의 종교소설이 보여주지 못 한, 이승우 소설만의 의미 있는 성취를 보여주는 지점이다.
