This paper deals with [John] Hawkes-O’connor Debate which has been continued even today. The novelist, John Hawkes regarded Flannery O’Connor as being on “the demonic” side for her victimization of the characters. Not agreeing with this view, O’Connor argued for her treatment of the protagonist, Hazel Motes, as a ‘Protestant saint.’ For this, we need to know the protestant ethic defined by Max Weber and Jean Calvin. Weber’s protestant ethic proposes the ascetic and rational control of our behaviors, leading to the capitalist spirit of rational control of wealth. The Weberian protestant ethic, however, is not fit for O’Connor’s concept of the ‘Protestant saint’ for Motes. Rather, Jean Calvin’s views of protestantism centering on grace helps to notice how the protestant world of the South failed to accomplish the true protestant ethic, by merely being obsessed with evangelism without the inner conformity to God’s grace and faith. In Wise Blood, the protestant practitioners, both parents or religious leaders in the modern South, lead their children to be lost astray. This paper deals with how O’Connor points out the South or the modern society needs to have the true spirit of grace and redemption without corrupted results of false prophets.

이 논문은 오늘까지도 이어지는, 소위 혹스-오코너 논쟁을 다룬다. 존 혹스는 작가가 너무 공격적 그리고 가학적 성향의 창조적 충동, 즉 그로테스크하게 작 중인물을 다루어 신성의 속성보다 아이들의 고통에 더 눈길이 가게 한다는 점에서 ‘악령적 편’에 있다고 보았다. 이 해석에 반대하는 오코너는 헤이즐 모우츠가 ‘프로테스탄트 성인’이라고 강조하면서 겉으로 보기에 혹독한 작중인물들은 이렇게 그로테스크하게 글을 쓰지 않으면 사람들이 봐야 할 것을 보지 못하게 된다고 옹호한다. ‘프로테스탄트 성인’으로서의 오코너의 모우츠를 이해하기 위해 먼저 막스 베버와 장 칼뱅으로 대변되는 프로테스탄트 윤리 시각을 살펴 본다. 베버의 프로테스탄트 윤리 시각은 은총과 구원을 강조하는 오코너의 기독교 시각을 대변하지 못한다. 베버보다는 전형적으로 성경에 입각한 원래 칼뱅의 프로테스탄트 윤리가 은총과 구원을 강조하는 오코너의 시각에 부합되는 것을 보여준다. 이런 칼뱅적 프로테스탄트 윤리의 측면에서 보았을 때, 어른들의 잘못된 구원관과 부모들의 왜곡된 삶으로 ‘길 잃은 양’들이 된 이 작중인물들을 보면서 왜 오코너가 그로테스크한 방법으로 종교적 시각의 소설을 쓸 수밖에 없는지를 발견하게 된다.
