The purpose of this paper is to diachronically consider the aspect of Murukaṉ’s figuration in Caṅkam literature. Murugaṉ is a god of war and victory who symbolizes Tamil Nadu. The earliest literary record on him can be found in Caṅkam literature composed during the Caṅkam age. In the early Caṅkam poems, Murugaṉ is depicted as a god who resides in kuṟiňci mountain, a fearsome god who punishes the wicked, and a god who makes young women suffer for love. The Veṟiyāttam ritual, performed by a vēlaṉ to appease Murugaṉ’s anger, serves as a poetic device to dramatically show the secret love feelings of unmarried lovers. After the encounter between Tamil and Sanskrit cultures, Murukaṉ’s figuration also changed. The puranic elements were added to the early Murukaṉ’s image; he became the celestial army commander. Simultaneously, Murukaṉ worship developed systematically, establishing a new order; consequentially, Murukaṉ became a universal god. This change in Murukaṉ’s figuration in Caṅkam literature implies Bhakti literature’s birth that appeared in Tamil literature’s history later.

본 논문의 목적은 상감문학에 나타난 무루간의 형상화 양상을 통시적으로 고찰하는 것이다. 무루간은 전쟁과 승리의 신이자 따밀나두를 상징하는 신이다. 그에 대한 따밀문학의 가장 오래된 기록은 상감 시대에 저작된 상감문학에서 찾을 수 있다. 초기 상감 시에서 그는 꾸린지 산의 주인이자 악한 자를 벌하는 무시무시한 신, 처녀에게 사랑의 고통을 주는 신으로 그려진다. 무루간의 분노를 달래기 위해 행해지는 베리얏땀 의식은 결혼하지 않은 연인의 비밀스러운 사랑의 감정을 극적으로 보여주기 위한 시적 장치로 기능한다. 북인도를 대표하는 산스끄리뜨 문화와 남인도를 대표하는 따밀 문화가 만나면서 상감문학에 나타난 무루간의 형상화 양상에도 변화가 생겼다. 초기 상감 시에 나타난 무루간 의 이미지에 신화적 요소가 더해지기 시작했고, 그는 신성 군대의 사령관이 되었다. 이와 함께 무루간 숭배는 새로운 질서를 세우며 체계적으로 발전하게 되었고, 무루간은 보편적인 신이 되어 세상에 편재하게 된다. 상감문학에 나타난 무루간의 형상화 양상의 변화는 이후 따밀문학사에 등장하는 박띠문학의 태동을 알리는 암시가 된다.
