This study examines the current phenomenon of Korean religious rites producing and practicing alternative rituals in response to a global pandemic crisis, borrowing from Michel de Certeau’s concepts of ‘strategy’ and ‘tactics.’ Certeau’s ‘strategy’ signifies a calculation for which the actions of the powerful control the people within a specific ‘place.’ On the other hand, ‘tactics’ demonstrates the weaker’s practice to beat the stronger by producing a ‘space’ of subjective actions even though the weak do not escape from the place of the strong. Religious ritual in its original meaning could be a place-oriented strategy that establishes a sacred interior space—a holy place. Considering the power relations imbedded in the original religious ritual as well as the visible control over the dominant as a strategy, cyber(online) rituals in cyberspace achieve tactical success by practicing the spatialization of places against not only the hierarchical order of religion, but also the attacks of viruses invading the human body.

본 연구는 한국의 종교들이 전 지구적인 전염병의 위험에 대비하여 새로운 유형의 대안 의례를 생산하고 실천하는 현상에 대해서 미셸드 세르토의 전략 과 전술 개념을 차용하여 해석하고 고찰하는 기회를 마련하였다. 세르토의 ‘전략’은 특정한 장소를 중심으로 지배자의 행위가 피지배자들을 통치하는 계산이라면, ‘전술’은 약자가 강자의 지배 영역 안에서 도피하지 않으면서도 주체적인 행위의 공간을 생산하면서 승리하려는 작전의 실천이다. 본래적인 의미의 종교의 의례는 공간의 무한함과 무질서에서 중심을 설정하고 거룩하고 성스러운 내 부의 장소를 구축하는 장소화 전략이다. 본래적인 종교의 의례에 함축되어 있는 권력 관계와 피지배자들에 대한 가시적인 통제를 전략이라고 본다면, 가상공간 속에서 이루어지는 사이버(온라인) 의례는 종교 내부의 위계질서와 인체에 침범 하는 바이러스의 공격을 무력화하는 장소의 공간화를 실천하면서 전술적 성공을 이룬다.
