This study tries to look into the literary world of D. H. Lawrence and finds how he transforms sex, the object of shame, into a sacred, noble, and essential attribute given from God in the Creation. For Lawrence, love is not a product of either the mind or the body only; it is fulfilled when the mind and the body are in harmony, and when there is a balance between them. In Lady Chatterley’s Lover, Lawrence recovers the sacredness of sex from the hypocritical conventions of society through Lady Chatterley who dares to overcome the barrier that has been set up for a long time against women. Then he elevates the love between man and woman to a religion in which he believes in flesh and blood as the core of human existence.

이 논문의 목적은 D. H. 로렌스가 과거 금기시 하고 수치로 치부해온 성(性) 에 대한 담론을 어떻게 문학을 통하여 공론화하고 이를 통하여 성을 문학적 아름다움의 대상으로 삼았는지를 살펴보는데 있다. 당시 음란함과 신성모독이란 온갖 논란의 중심에서 로렌스는 오히려 성을 하나님이 창조 시 인간에게 부여한 가장 원초적이고 성스러운 뿌리로 간주하고, 혈과 육이란 세속적 가치를 종교적 차원의 신앙으로 승화시킨다. 인간의 고귀한 성이 타락과 함께 수치의 대상으로 전락한 것은 성 자체의 변질이 아니라 그걸 가려놓고 은밀하게 행하는 위선 때문이라고 일갈한다. 『채털리 부인의 연인』은 잃어버린 성을 되찾으려는 로렌스의 과감한 시도이고 그 시도는 그의 문학을 새로운 차원으로 올려놓는다. 이 소설에서 로렌스는 거룩함과 수치라는 성의 양면성을 클리포드와 멜러스라 는 두 인물의 세계를 통하여 대비하면서, 그 두 세계를 왕래하는 채털리 부인으로 하여금 진정한 성의 의미를 머리가 아니라 육체로 깨닫게 한다. 로렌스에게 있어서 이것은 곧 혈과 육이란 종교이고 도덕이고, 그것은 위선을 버린 인간의 참된 모습이란 사실을 여과 없이 보여준다.
