Abstract

The purpose of this thesis is to claim that Kingsley, a clergyman, reformer, and intellectual of the time, displayed unconscious conflicts between religion and science in his fantasy novel, The Water-Babies. In The Water-Babies, mythical narratives and scientific narratives appear at the same time, a phenomenon that was analyzed as unique characteristics of early fantasy narratives. First, I briefly looked at the history of fantasy narratives, and then analyzed the mythical aspects of The Water-Babies into the archetypes of water, mother, and opposites, and looked at the main character Tom’s journey to reach Self by achieving individualization through underwater travel. Finally, I looked at how scientific elements were incorporated in the middle of the novel, revealing Kingsley’s obsession with science. Through this research, it is possible to understand the ideas of the time, take a closer look at the characteristics of early fantasy narratives, and also get a glimpse of the potential development of fantasy narratives afterward.
