This paper explores the tension between Christianity and the African traditional religion in August Wilson’s plays and the vision of African American’s identity. August Wilson has apparently chosen to focus on the African American’s oppression in their country to symbolize the collective struggles of all African Americans. We can easily see characters in his play who are struggling with and wrestling over their ideas of religion and God. He sets up the conflict and tension between the role of Christianity and the African traditional religion in Piano Lesson and The Fences. Through these works, he shows the problems of dichotomous attitudes toward the two religions and the difficulty of creating a true identity for blacks. In particular, Wilson asks the African American community to renounce ties with the spiritual world and to develop a beneficial and sound awareness of the more immediate features of their lives. Consequently, I assert that Wilson’s plays are a contemporary commentary on the role of religion in the lives of African Americans.
