This study aims to re-read Mohsin Hamid’s How to Get Filthy Rich in Rising Asia through Max Weber’s The Protestant Ethic and The Spirit of Capitalism, analyzing the power of the religious attribute of capitalism as an ideology on an individual’s economic attitude and the absence of ethics in contemporary capitalism. By delving into the narrative structure, this study discusses the religious narrative of ‘reading the Bible’ which is associated with a God-believer and an author-reader relationships in Weber’s book and Mohsin Hamid’s novel. In this context, this study also analyzes the novel in search of the contemporary representation of the spiritually and ethically distorted ethics in terms of the absence of Weber’s spirit of capitalism and its ethics. This discussion involves focusing on “you”’s desire for wealth with little interest in ethical or spiritual matters and considering “you”s awakened disillusionment as a conclusion.

본 논문은 막스 베버의 『프로테스탄트 윤리와 자본주의 정신』을 통한 모신 하미드의 『떠오르는 아시아에서 더럽게 부자 되는 법』의 다시 읽기로서, 두 작 품에서에서 발견되는 ‘성경 읽기’의 내러티브 구조를 통해 『떠오르는 아시아에 서 더럽게 부자 되는 법』이 현대 자본주의의 문제를 근대자본주의 윤리의 상실 의 결과로 재현하고 있음을 분석한다. 이를 위해 본 논문은 이 두 작품이 신-신 자, 작가-독자의 관계 속에서 성경 읽기의 종교적 내러티브 구조를 이루고 있음 을 논의하고, 자본주의의 종교적 속성이 개인의 경제관에 실질적 영향을 미치는 이데올로기로서 작용함을 살펴본다. 또한 이러한 맥락 속에서 베버의 종교적 윤 리로서의 근대자본주의 정신이 하미드의 소설 배경인 현대자본주의 시대에 이 르러 변질된 윤리의 상실로 재현되고 있음을 살펴봄으로써, 하미드의 『떠오르 는 아시아에서 더럽게 부자 되는 법』이 재현하는 현대자본주의의 문제가 종교 적, 윤리적 차원의 분석 대상이 될 수 있음을 살펴본다.
