This paper aims to examine Thomas Cromwell’s religious experiences as portrayed in Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall by following the formation of the Church of England. In Wolf Hall, Mantel’s Cromwell helps Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn to marry, and plays a vital role in revising the canon law with the Supremacy Acts. He is a prominent and resolute politician who becomes Henry’s adviser, Master of the Rolls, and even Vicegerent in Spirituals, which is a new role that Cromwell is appointed to by Henry VIII. Here, it is interesting to note that his involvement in political revolutions and religious reformations is not for the Tudor dynasty, but for his faith and personal revenge. That is, Mantel’s Cromwell is a religious man who believes in his own god, belonging to neither the Catholic Church nor the Church of England.

이 논문에서는 2009년 부커상 수상작인 힐러리 맨틀의『울프 홀』에 재현된 영국성공회 형성 과정을 고찰하면서 토머스 크롬웰의 종교관을 다루고자 한다. 『울프 홀』에서 맨틀의 크롬웰은 튜더왕조의 헨리 8세와 앤 불린의 혼인을 다루 는 과정에서 가톨릭교회에서 분리하는 영국성공회 형성과 수장령 선포의 교회 법 개정에 중요한 역할을 수행한다. 이러한 맨틀의 크롬웰은 탁월하고 결단력을 갖춘 정치가로서 헨리 8세의 자문관, 기록보관장관, 심지어 헨리 8세가 부여한 성직관리관으로 임명되는 신분상승을 이룬다. 여기서 주목하고자 하는 것은 그 의 정치적 혁명과 종교적 개혁이 잉글랜드의 튜더왕조를 위한 대의명분이 아닌, 그의 개인적인 종교적 경험에 근거를 두고 있다는 것이다. 이에 의해 맨틀의 크 롬웰은 가톨릭과 영국성공회에 구속받지 않는, 즉 자신만의 신을 따르는 종교적 인간으로 읽어낼 수 있다.
