Poets’ words have a lot of common factors with those of prophets’s. Firstly, they use diverse symbols and rely on contexts for meanings. Secondly, they transcend ordinary usages functioning as signs and symbols. There have been a lot of poets whose language takes on the prophetic features such as William Blake, William Wordsworth, P. B. Shelley, John Milton, W. B. Yeats, and T. S. Eliot. They expressed the social ambience combined with their own poetic philosophy through their poems. They also placed symbolic messages into their works in a form of signs and symbols that could transcend the literary representations and be interpreted as universal symbols. In this vein, Eliot’s Four Quartets has been evaluated to be religious and philosophical. This paper aims to reveal that to interpret those messages is similar to interpreting the prophetic words which may share their poetic imagination by examining Walter Benjamin’s philosophy on language and oriental philosophy of Myungrihak.

예언자의 언어와 시인의 언어는 여러 가지 면에서 공통점을 갖는다. 첫째, 다양한 상징과 맥락을 중요시한다는 것이다. 둘째, 일상적인 언어를 사용하면서 일상적 차원을 초월한 문자 혹은 기호로서 기능한다. 시인이면서도 예언자적 특성과 문학적 상징을 사용했던 작가들의 목록은 매우 길다. 윌리엄 블레이크, 윌리엄 워즈워드, P. B. 셸리 등과 같은 낭만주의 시인뿐만 아니라 밀턴이나 예이츠, 엘리엇과 같은 시인은 단순한 문학적 표상을 넘어 시대와 문화 국경을 초월하는 보편적인 상징과 기호로 해독되어야 하는 메시지를 작품 속에 담았다. 엘 리엇은 매우 종교적이고 철학적인 시인으로 평가되는 만큼, 그의 대표작인『네 사중주』는 여러 관점에서 종교적이고 철학적인 메시지를 담고 있다. 본 논문은 그러한 메시지의 형식과 의미가 생산되고 수용되며 해석되는 방식이 예언자들의 점사언어를 해석하는 방식과 매우 유사하다는 것을 밝히며, 어떻게 예언적 점사언어가 예술로서의 시적 상상력을 고취시킬 수 있는지에 대해, 시학적으로, 언어적으로, 그리고 기호학적으로 살펴보고 있다. 이를 위해 고대 중국에서부터 사용되던 갑골문의 갑자(甲子)력 체계를 근간으로 한 명리학의 해석체계와 발터 벤야민의 언어기호에 대한 일반적 이론을 근거로 하여, 예언적 기호로서의 언어가 어떻게 문학적, 시학적 가치를 갖게 되는지를 살펴본다.
