Tess and “The Weak’s Sorrow” deals with the issues of women sacrificed by symbolic powers in the period of modernization. Being regarded as ‘others,’ lives of women as individual subjects have close connection with love and religion. Tess and Elizabeth’s wishes for romantic love are vulnerable, facing symbolic powers of the society. However, their different attitudes to symbolic power brings forth quite different results for the future. The comparative study of two works illustrates literary visions of insights on the past, reflections of the present and planning of the future. As the quest for subjective life as an individual is urgent, it is important to figure out the value of true love overcoming symbolic powers of each period in the history of pre-modernization, modernization and post-modernization. At this point, the two works reveal that an individual’s happiness can be attained without being subjected and defeated by symbolic power.

『테스』와「약한 자의 슬픔」은 발표된 시기와 문화적 배경이 다름에도 불구 하고, 근대화 시대의 상징 권력에 의해 희생당하는 여성의 문제를 다루고 있다. 근대의 상징 권력 하에서 여성은 여전히 쉽게 타자로 간주 된다. 주체적 존재로서의 여성의 삶은 사랑과 종교 담론에 밀접한 관련성을 갖게 된다. 두 작품 속에 나타나는 주인공인 테스와 엘리자베트가 꿈꾸는 낭만적 사랑은 근대화 시대의 상징 권력에 직면하게 됨으로써 취약한 상태에 놓이게 된다. 궁극적으로 사회의 상징 권력에 대한 개인적 태도에 따라서 미래의 삶에 대한 양상은 다른 모습을 보여준다. 두 작품의 비교는 과거를 통하여 현재를 성찰하고 미래를 기획 하는데 문학적 지혜를 제공한다. 위기에 놓인 인간의 주체적인 삶에 대한 모색은 무엇보다도 중요하다. 전근대, 근대화, 탈근대라는 역사의 진행 과정에서 각 시대의 상징 권력을 뛰어넘음으로써 참된 사랑의 가치를 발견하는 것이 중요하다. 그리고 이때 사회적 상징 권력에 종속되거나 패배하지 않고 개인의 행복을 꿈꿀 가능성이 담보될 수 있다는 점을 두 작품은 보여준다.
