Literature of courtly love is one of the literary legacies that represent the medieval romance. Courtly love literature, which focuses on the love story of the Lady (the Lord’s wife) and the knight, has been considered to reflect the elevated social position of women in the patriarchal Medieval society. Some medieval scholars insisted that the cult of the Virgin Mary and the absence of the lords during the Crusades contributed to this elevation. Nevertheless, others still believe that this literary trend is only the dream of medieval people whose real lives became miserable after experiencing the Black Death. This paper studies the real position of the lady in medieval society, focusing on the courtly love of Sir. Lancelot and Queen Guinevere, and Sir Tristram and Queen Isode in Morte d’Arthur.

중세를 대표하는 로만스 장르 중의 하나는 궁정풍 사랑의 문학이다. 이 궁정 풍 사랑의 문학은 12세기 남프랑스 프로방스 지방에서 발전한 문학의 한 형태로, 이 사랑은 군주의 부인인 레이디와 기사의 사랑을 주 주제로 삼는다. 이 궁 정풍 사랑은 특히 성모 마리아 숭배 사상과 결합하여 이전의 시대와는 달리 레 이디를 여신과 같은 지위로 높여 숭배한다. 하지만 실제적으로 교회 제도의 영 향을 받아 가부장적 사회가 주축이 되는 중세 시대에 이와 같은 사랑의 형식이 존재했는지에 대한 의문이 제기된다. 본 논문은 15세기 기사문학의 정수로 평가받는 말로리의 『아서 왕의 죽음』에 그려진 랜슬롯 경과 귀네비어 왕비의 사랑, 트리스트람 경과 이조드의 사랑 이야기를 중심으로 궁정풍 사랑에 대한 중 세의 시각을 논해 보고자 한다. 그런 후 과연 이와 같은 사랑이 과연 중세 사회 에서 현실적으로 존재했는지 중세의 종교, 사회, 문학적인 실재를 중심으로 설 명해보고자 한다.
