This paper reads Eve’s dream in Book V and XII of Paradise Lost justifying the ways of God to men. Eve’s dream has long been discussed whether Eve is already fallen in dream before she actually eats the forbidden fruit. By focusing on Milton’s use of ‘or,’ this paper accounts the poem provides no explanation that Eve is fallen in dream of Book V, such as what causes Eve’s dream and whether it rises from Satan’s machinations only or from Eve’s desire as well. In addition, God makes the postlapsarian Eve dream in Book XII as what Adam dreams for next generation. By comparing the dreams of prelapsarian Eve in Book V and postlapsarian Eve in Book XII, this paper emphasize the status of Eve’s free will in regard to her dreams. Analyzing the cause of Eve’s dream and her action in the dream, I argue Eve is not passive and fallen in her dream but she chooses her action by free will.

이 글은 존 밀턴의 『실낙원』 5권과 12권에 나타난 이브의 꿈을 신의 섭리를 정당화하는 매개임을 주장한다. 밀턴이 『실낙원』에서 성서와 다르게 타락 전 이브와 타락 후 이브에게 각각 두 차례 꿈을 꾸게 한 이유를 17세기 꿈에 대한 비평들을 살펴보고 이를 바탕으로 이브의 자유의지를 다룬다. 특히 밀턴의 “or” 의 사용이 서로 다른 항목을 제공할 뿐 둘 중 어느 하나를 선택하지 않음으로써 결과가 불분명해지는 불확실의 기법이라는 점에 주목하여 밀턴이 이브가 타락 전 꿈을 꾸기 전 상황에서 “or”를 사용한 것을 분석한다. 이에 따라, 이브가 타락 전 꿈에서 선악과를 따먹은 행위는 이브가 수동적이거나 사탄에 의해 타락한 것이 아니라 이브가 그녀 스스로 자유의지에 의해 행동한 것이라 읽는다. 또한 밀턴이 타락 후 이브에게도 아담과 마찬가지로 인류의 미래에 대한 꿈을 보여준 것은 이브가 신과의 관계에서 진정한 자아를 찾아가는 과정 속에 있는 존재임을 깨닫게 하려는 신의 섭리로 읽는다.
