Abstract

The aim of this study is to illustrate Canadian identity focusing on Towards the Last Spike by E. J. Pratt which is a long narrative poem in blank verse and in an epic style about the construction of the first transcontinental railroad line in Canada. A lot of Pratt’s poems depict Canadian content, contributing to a growing Canadian nationalism, especially the epic poem Towards the Last Spike. Canada has a diverse makeup of nationalities and cultures and constitutional protection for policies that promote multiculturalism rather than a single national myth. Now South Korea can’t promote a single national myth. Because continuous mass immigration has been a feature of economy and society since 1980s in South Korea. So she needs multiculturalism. It refers to political or social policies which support or encourage such a coexistence and also supports the idea that cultural practices, no matter how unusual, should be tolerated as a measure of respect.
