The purpose of this study is to discuss how the event and development process among characters will be transformed into a festival with carnival characteristics through Chung-jun Lee’s Festival. In essence, carnivals are closely linked to ceremonies or rituals. Lee has presented the essential characteristics of the festival with respect to the death of the elderly. The appearance of Yong-soon during the funeral is a cause for the family to deepen the resentment of the deceased and the conflict between the family members. In such conflicts and confrontations, the sadness, remorse, and laughter of the people who have gone to the funeral home, the nonsense, and the disorder are presented harmoniously, leading to the process of integration pursued by the festival. In conclusion, the space of the old house through the death of the elderly is a space of coexistence that can experience new unity and understanding among the family, and at the same time, it becomes a real festival.

본 연구의 목적은 이청준이 『축제』라는 작품을 통해서 등장인물들 사이의 사건이나 전개과정이 어떻게 카니발의 특성을 지닌 축제로 거듭나게 되는지에 대한 논의를 하고자 한다. 본질적으로 카니발은 제식이나 의례와 밀접하게 연결되어 있다. 다시 말해서, 죽음을 위한 축제의식을 수행하는 동안 참여자들은 죽음을 통한 삶의 변화 가능성을 모색하게 된다는 것이다. 이청준은 노인의 죽음을 소재로 축제가 지니고 있는 본질적 특성을 제시해주고 있다. 장례식이 진행되는 동안 용순의 출현은 가족들로 하여금 죽은 노인에 대한 원망과 가족들 사이의 갈등이 깊어지게 하는 요인이다. 이러한 갈등 및 대립 속에서 노인을 떠나 보내는 슬픔, 회한, 그리고 장례식장을 찾은 사람들의 웃음, 떠들썩한 난장, 그리고 무질서가 조화롭게 제시되면서 축제가 추구하고 있는 통합의 과정으로 나아가고 있다. 결론적으로 노인의 죽음을 매개로 고향집의 공간은 가족들 사이의 새로운 결속과 이해를 경험할 수 있는 공존의 공간이며, 동시에 진정한 축제로 거듭나게 되는 것이다.
