The problem of evil has been a difficult subject for those who believe in a good and omnipotent God, because their coexistence is contradictory. The traditional view of evil as a result of sin hurts ​the concept of God’s goodness. Whitehead and Hick present a theodicy that advocates God’s goodness while costing his omnipotence. Whitehead sees evil as a source of creativity and uncontrollable power in the universe, and thus his God is trying to solve the problem of evil. Hick recognizes evil as playing an important role in human growth in the process of realizing the creative ideals of God. The​se authors provide important insight​s into the present issue, but they can hardly avoid ​the criticism that they only present reinterpretations of the problem of evil rather than the actual solutions. Accordingly, as an alternative, the researcher has presented a new model that pursues an understanding of the spiritual and eschatological perspectives behind the phenomenon through Job’s sufferings.

악의 문제는 선하고 전능한 하나님을 믿는 이들에게 난해한 주제가 되어 왔는데, 이는 둘의 공존이 모순이 되기 때문이다. 악을 죄의 결과로 보는 전통적 견해는 하나님의 선하심에 상처를 입힌다. 화이트헤드와 힉은 하나님의 선하심을 옹호하면서, 전능성을 희생하는 또 다른 신정론을 제시한다. 화이트헤드는 악을 우주의 창조성의 원천이자 통제 불능의 능력으로 봄으로써, 하나님조차 그 악과 고난의 문제를 해결하기 위해 애쓰는 분으로 인식한다. 힉은 악을 하나님의 창조적 이상을 실현하기 위한 과정에서 한 인간의 성장을 위해 중요한 역할을 하는 것으로 인식한다. 이 저자들은 악의 문제에 대한 중요한 통찰을 제공하지만, 실제적인 해결책보다는 악의 문제에 대한 재해석을 제공하는데 그쳤다는 평가를 면하기 어렵다. 이에 본 연구자는 하나의 대안으로서 욥의 고난을 통해 현상 이면의 영적 및 종말적 관점의 이해를 추구하는 새로운 모델을 제시하였다.
