This study explores the role of a musical metaphor in John Donne’s “Hymn to God, My God, in My Sickness,” a metaphor that opens the first stanza, and then disappears from the surface of the poem. Given that the “Hymn” is composed during Donne’s serious illness, the metaphor that “I tune the instrument here at the door” indicates something Donne has to do on his deathbed in order to be acceptable to God. This study finds that though nothing develops from the metaphor in the poem, it works as an overarching theme to make the “Hymn” itself an act of tuning for the poet to prepare for the afterlife in heaven. The poem turns out to be a deathbed confession of his strong faith in the resurrection, rather than an ordinary confession of sins to alleviate his guilt and regret. So it becomes a sermon, a prayer, and a hymn for Donne, and helps him come to an assurance of salvation as a logical conclusion.
