This thesis deals with Korean War memoirs of foreign missionaries participating in “The March of Death.” To do this, I examine the memoirs written by Sr. Eugenie, Fr. Coyos, Sr. Marie, Fr. Crosbie who have lived in North Korea since 1945. From the point of foreign missionaries, Catholic provided the others with a reason to use the Cold War ideology. At the same time, Catholic provided cognitive possibilities of the hope of restoring and living the life of victims in the disaster of Korean War. In this process, it made mourning for the hardship and death of others, and even build up solidarity in a community sharing the disaster of Korean War. I argue that a disaster occurs when religion acts as an ideological apparatus, but a religion paradoxically can heal victims in disaster situations and bring out community solidarity.

본고는 한국전쟁 당시 ‘죽음의 행진’에 참여한 외국인 선교사들의 수기에 관해 연구한다. 이를 위해 당시 남한 사회에 거주하고 있던 멜 으제니 수녀, 셀레스뗑 코요스 신부, 가르멜회의 마리 마들렌 수녀, 필립 크로스비 신부가 작성한 한국전쟁 수기를 살펴본다. 한국전쟁 당시 외국인 선교사들은 냉전 이데올로기와는 무관하게 주어진 소명에 충실한 삶을 살고 있었다. 하지만 천주교는 북한군들에게 냉전 체제 속 이데올로기에 따른 타자 만들기의 빌미가 된다. 동시에 전쟁 포로들에게는 재난 상황 속에서 피해자들의 삶을 회복하고, 살아갈 수 있게 하는 희망에 대한 인식적 가능성을 제공한다. 이 과정에서 전쟁이라는 재난을 공유하는 공동체 속에서 타인의 고난과 죽음에 대한 기억과 애도, 더 나아가 연대를 가능하게 해준다. 본고에서는 한국전쟁 외국인 선교사들의 수기를 통해 종교가 이데올로기적 기구로 작용하는 과정에서는 재난을 일으키지만, 역설적으로 그러한 재난 상황 속 피해자들을 치유하고 공동체적 연대를 가능하게 하는 것 역시 종교라는 점을 확인할 수 있다.
