ohn Donne adopts and develops the key concerns of St. Ignatius of Loyola’s The Spiritual Exercises in his poetry and prose. Donne, who struggled with the persistent turmoil of his internal world throughout his life, attempts to discover where such chaos originates and how he can be relieved from the turbulent experiences. While looking into his interior chaos, he, unlike in the satirical piece Ignatius His Conclave, was highly impressed by St. Ignatius’ contemplative booklet, The Spiritual Exercises. In The Spiritual Exercises St. Ignatius procreates vigorous mental activities and enterprises which contribute to uncovering and overcoming the distress and problem of one’s psychological and religious domains. The article investigates how the poet creatively responds to St. Ignatius’ suggestive ideas to enrich his spiritual fortification by reestablishing his compliance to the grace and precepts of God. The paper also scrutinizes the boundary of St Ignatius’ contemplative devices which Donne was keenly aware of when reworking The Spiritual Exercises.
