It is since the 1980’s that The Showings, which was written by the firstEnglish woman writer, Julian of Norwich, has been studied actively in variousacademic fields. This is due to the fact that critical modern English versions of itsshort text (1373) and long text (1393) became available during the 1970’s. Despitethe efforts to be accurate in translation, the scholars had difficulties searching forappropriate modern words for some medieval words such as ‘homely’ and‘curteyse.’ This article deals with the properties of the Trinity, the Lord JesusChrist, that Julian saw through sixteen revelations, analyzing the words, ‘homely’and ‘curteyse’ in the medieval context covering the advantageous characteristics ofa woman writer in a time of the male-dominated medieval literary trends.
