John Donne wrote poetry in a communicative mode of his time byawakening cultural realities in the way of using a conversation style. Much ofDonne’s poetry was interested in the art of rhetoric provoking laughter in hisreaders by deliberately utilizing conventional devices in his oral-styled poetry oflove and ‘self-annihilation.’ His poetry is not only trying to be clever in dealingwith language, but often trying to be funny in mocking cultural realities: killingoneself is not “a particularly heinous crime.” With “The Canonization” and “TheFlea,” the poem “Confined Love” is a typical example showing self-annihilationfor love, like Christ himself committed suicide, a mysterious sense of human souland body as “Canoniz’d for Love” as if to be the religion of love.
