Abstract

Dominated by Modernism and Postmodernism in the history of Westernliterature, a large number of studies on Samuel Beckett’s Endgame have mainlyfocused on either the absurd mode of human existence in modern world or thesarcastic aspects of modern lives disregarding the enrichment of Biblical allusionsin the work. Even though researchers of “literature and religion” have hesitated tofigure out some religious meanings of literary works overpowered by “HighTheory,” such literary critics of Neo-Marxism as Theodore W. Adorno, GillesDeleuze, and Alain Badiou have demonstrated new interpretations on Beckett’sliterary world based on their ideas of “negativity,” “rhizome,” and “le generigue.”Therefore, it is strongly needed to recognize Beckett’s strategy of using “negativetraits” which do not necessarily mean negative meanings all the time. “Negativetraits” in Endgame illumine the possibility of the eschatological vision of parousiapropelled by the enrichment of Biblical allusions.
