KIM Eun-Kook’s The Martyred exposes the persecutor’s ignoranceand the blindness of violence, which mirrors René Girard’s ‘scapegoatmechanism.’ The lies of Colonel Chang can be regarded as similar to peoplewho throw stones and lead to the operation of the scapegoat mechanism. KIMpinpoints the nature of violence as the essence of the scapegoat mechanism andconverts his novel by setting up a first-person narrative. In the middle of thenovel, the narration shifts its focus from the persecutor towards the scapegoatand from the person having the affair to the person enduring it. KIM’s spiritualinsight clearly conveys the turmoil inside the mind of the scapegoat, ReverendShin. However, the helpless Reverend Shin, who puts into practice Jesus’commands of helping “the least of these” people and attempts to thwart theoperation of the ‘scapegoat mechanism,’ would be remembered for a long timealong with the truth that the novel attempts to convey.
