The Spirituality of Unhurried Walking: Kenotic Initiation in Joyce Rupp’s Camino Pilgrimage Narrative
Abstract
Focusing on Joyce Rupp’s pilgrimage narrative, Walk in a Relaxed Manner: Life Lessons from the Camino, this study examines, through Mircea Eliade’s theory of ‘initiation,’ how individuals exhausted by achievement-oriented values and the supremacy of speed sever ties with profane time and seek to reconnect with a sacred order by walking the Camino de Santiago. This journey facilitates three major stages of spiritual transformation: pilgrims dismantle the self imprisoned by the imperative of productivity through ‘Kenosis’—a total surrender to divine providence; they experience the ‘sanctification of the everyday’ by prioritizing the present moment of walking over the final destination; and, stripped of social status, they restore spiritual solidarity through ‘Communitas’ by engaging with others as unique personal histories via ‘narrative imagination.’ Ultimately, Rupp’s narrative demonstrates that the Camino transcends mere geographical movement, serving as a modern ‘rite of initiation’ and a site of existential recovery that shifts the individual from a self-centered existence to a life aligned with divine providence.
