Sorrow as Karuṇā: The Driving Force of the Struggle without Hatred in The Silence of the Beloved
Abstract
This paper argues, through readings of “Samādhi of Sorrow,” “I Saw You,” and the title poem, that the poetic term “sorrow” in Han Yong-un’s The Silence of the Beloved corresponds to the Buddhist concept of karuṇā (悲心), and that this sorrow was the driving force of a struggle without hatred. A monk, poet, and independence activist, Han did not display Buddhist terms on the surface of the collection but rendered them in everyday language, and “sorrow” is one such instance. Karuṇā is a mind that empathizes with and feels compassion for the suffering of others, distinguished from hatred (瞋心), which, concerned only with one’s own suffering, turns against others. The paper reads this sorrow as a mind seeking to recover the non-duality of self and other (自他不二), distinguishing it from readings that reduce it to a nihilism of impermanence, to national loss, or to conventional lyric sentiment.
