The Apocalyptic Salvation in the Mythopoesis of Hölderlin and Chun-su Kim: From the Theological Perspective of Karl Barth
Abstract
This study compares apocalyptic salvation in the mythopoetry of Friedrich Hölderlin and Chun-su Kim from Karl Barth’s theological perspective. Hölderlin’s “Bread and Wine” portrays history as a process of apocalyptic salvation, moving from the modern “night” of divine absence through the “day” of the gods’ presence to the “holy night” awaiting Christ’s return. Bread and wine signify the Eucharist and the promise of the Second Coming, while salvation is an eschatological event in which humanity draws closer to the divine. By contrast, Kim’s mythopoetry seeks Christ’s return and salvation through His blood in a world ruled by sin. In “Narcotic” and “Nail,” Jesus refuses wine and accepts the pain and bloodshed of the Crucifixion, while the “new human being” follows Christ by sharing in His suffering. Thus, whereas Hölderlin understands salvation as humanity drawing closer to God, Kim understands it as reconciliation: God descends into human suffering and draws closer to humanity.
