Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of suicide in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Fyodor Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov, examining how suicide in the works is intertwined with questions of sin, despair, death, and salvation. By examining characters who complete suicide, attempt suicide, or contemplate suicide, as well as situations in which suicide is considered or mentioned, this study analyzes how their motives and the responses to suicide engage with the questions of sin and salvation. In Hamlet, suicide reveals a tension between the desire to escape earthly suffering and the Christian awareness of eternity after death. In The Brothers Karamazov, it exposes self-destructive impulses arising from fantasy, shame, and anger, while bringing the problem of salvation into focus. In both works, suicide serves as an important means of understanding human suffering and despair. Within the Christian tradition that regards suicide as a sin, these works prompt careful reflection on judgment and salvation while considering both theological evaluation and love for human beings.
